ARTIST BIO

Uma Barry is a self-taught artist whose creative journey began at the age of fifteen, lovingly nurtured and inspired by her artistic parents. Her body of work is distinguished by an intricate exploration of nature’s beauty, with a particular focus on Australian landscapes, native flora, and water scenes. Uma’s paintings often feature close studies of gum trees, vibrant botanicals, flowing streams, sunlit coastlines, and the delicate textures of flowers—each reflecting her deep connection to the natural world.

Her style is defined by a rich, warm palette, fine detailing, and an elegant play of light that brings each scene to life with a blend of realism and softness. While she enjoys working across a range of sizes, she holds a special fondness for painting miniatures. This practice has sharpened her compositional instincts and taught her the art of distilling expansive scenes into intimate spaces—a creative challenge she continues to relish.

At the heart of Uma’s art is a deep and enduring love for drawing. Every painting begins with careful sketching and observation, as she believes drawing forms the essential foundation of her practice. Her creative process is patient and immersive—she does not rush to the finish line but instead enjoys the journey. Uma frequently uses the traditional glazing method, building her paintings slowly in translucent layers to achieve depth, luminosity, and richness. She often works on multiple pieces throughout the week, allowing each to evolve naturally while drying between layers. This rhythm, guided by intuition and mood, allows her to stay fully engaged with each work and honour the time and thought her creativity deserves.

Uma’s work captures the quiet poetry found in everyday natural surroundings, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and appreciate the subtle grace of the environment.

Over the years, her dedication and talent have been recognised through numerous awards, and her artworks now reside in both private and public collections across the globe. A significant milestone came in 2015 when she was featured on the acclaimed television program Colour In Your Life, hosted by the late Graeme Stevenson—an esteemed artist and the visionary founder of the show.

For Uma, painting is more than a profession—it is a sanctuary. Following the loss of her beloved mother, art became her greatest source of healing and joy. Through every brushstroke, she honours her family, carries their love forward, and remains profoundly grateful for the gift of creating.
